THE BOOKHANDLER STORY: In 1989 Nancy Lemke was asked to write a book about the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Who? she asked, but she left her job at the San Diego Zoo to write and illustrate the book. This was her introduction to the fascinating characters and events of history. Lemke also learned that state standards require teachers to teach about obscure people like Cabrillo and they need good stories to interest kids in the people and events of history. Textbooks are often too dull or politically sanitized to do this. Lemke decided to bring the teachers who needed books together with the good books she knew of, so she founded THE BOOKHANDLER. Since then, she has grown THE BOOKHANDLER to over 1,000 titles. She's also consulted major children's publishers as a history expert, and written and/or edited more books Each catalog title is annotated honestly about each book's strengths and weaknesses. Nancy loves customers to call and ask for book suggestions on particular topics. If she doesn't know one off the top of her head, she'll gladly research it.
