This is a rare book that meets many needs for 4th-grade teachers, besides being fascinating to read. It is a primary resource recounting some of the memories of a California Indian girl, a rancho boy, and a gold rush girl. Each excerpt has an excellent introduction describing the era, and the memoir contains a few intriguing vignettes that typify that time. Excellent!
