This is one of the few good fiction books about California Indians. Pasquala's family belongs to the Yokut tribe and live in the Central Valley. On their annual trip to the Pacific to gather supplies only the ocean can provide, Pasquala becomes sick, and her parents seek help from padres. Thus begins their conflicting experiences with mission life. Very good insight into mission and Native American interactions.
