Indians of the California Mission Frontier

This book describes clearly the changes Indians faced on entering the missions. It also does a good job with the enigmatic nature of the mission experience. Some Indians adapted well, while others were devastated. Includes the life of Toypurina who plotted agains the padres at Mission San Gabriel, but later married a soldier and lived happily in the Spanish community at San Juan Bautista. Good for discussion.
